The Crucifixion Monument

Background

Rip was awarded the commission of sculpting Mary & Joseph and The Crucifixion Scene by the Diocese of Wichita for installation in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Cathedral Arts Committee selected Rip after a nationwide search, based on his proven ability to capture and convey the spirit and essence of his subjects.

Approach

The concept that was developed with the Arts Committee was to show Joseph as a protector, a supporter, father-figure to Christ and husband of Mary. A pregnant Mary needed to be shown looking across the Cathedral to another alcove where The Crucifixion Scene was installed. Rip was instructed to make it appear that Mary was looking across time, knowing and accepting the fate of her unborn Child.

Results

The sculptures were completed on time and within budget. The Cathedral Arts Committee is overjoyed with the quality and beauty of the artwork; and are very pleased that Rip fulfilled their wishes.
